How to identify my laptop

Hello everyone,

I'm new to Apple computers. I have a friend wanting to sell me an old PowerBook G3. The date on the back says 1998. So I don't know where to start. I don't know how much money to offer this person, or if its worth it at all.

My idea is to pick this up and load linux on it if it has the power to do it.

Can someone advise me? I've written down what I think the serial number may be:

CK83004JDG5
OR
BTO-Z00Q0020T

Thank you for your time,

TJ

TJ INAK, welcome to Apple Discussions. Hopefully we will be able to welcome you to the Mac community.

Look at the Powerbook specs on this link & you may be able to determine which one.

Will the PB boot up? What OS is it running? If it will boot, look at the Apple System Profiler under the Apple (left side) Menu. The System Profiler will tell you what processor speed in MHz, the amount of installed RAM & the hard drive size. Once you determine which model & the above info, we can provide an approximate value.

 Cheers, Tom 😉
